January 2012 Recipient Story
Mrs. Jenkins' 6th Grade Class, Malamalama Waldorf School – Kea'au, Hawaii hawaiiwaldorf.com
With the grant from Envision Art, Mrs. Jenkins' 6th grade class hired renowned local artist, Patricia Leo for the Spring semester. Mrs. Leo was immediately the new hit at the school and brought her amazing talent, energy and teaching methods to the classroom.
The class started with Gesture and Contour drawing as this was a great starting point helping to give the children and the teacher a chance to get to know each other as well as to find a comfortable and loose hand in their drawing. At first, the class focused on working with watercolor pencils, drawing with a precise plan and then softening the art pieces with a wet brush. Next, watercolor paints were introduced, beginning with lessons in the traditional Waldorf-style Veil Painting. The class finished off the year with guided watercolor paintings, where the children were encouraged to incorporate the light and layered paint skills learned from the previous project.
Envision Arts cannot thank Mrs. Leo enough for bringing this renewed energy and talent to the school. “She's what gets me to school every morning", says 6th grade student Haley. Through a variety of media, the students learned new painting skills and theory and created a bounty of artwork for their portfolios. Again, we thank Mrs. Leo for her dedication, additional donated time and donated materials that rounded out the wonderful experience!
Thank you too to the students in the class for all of the great thank you cards. You are the next generation of great artists in the making!
